Scientists in the Ukraine have managed to genetically cross an American Grey Squirrel with a African Rhino DNA. There have been many genetic crosses between different animals, GM food is common and there has even been even some experimentation on human DNA, but this cross with a Rhino and Squirrel is a significant breakthrough in genetic modification. This is because the Ukrainian scientists were actually able to specify which parts of an animal to cross, rather than simply charactoristics (as we do with genetically modified food, in which a scientist can cross different plants to make more resistant, hardier crops, etc).

CNN’s news reporter for the Ukraine said this in her report “The Rhino-Squirrel cross is not being classified as a new species as it is unable to reproduce, which means that technically it cannot be regarded as a species in itself”. Ukrainian scientists, however are arguing that some genetically modified plants that cannot reproduce (and rely on cuttings to propagate) have been classified as a subspecies and as such the Rhino-Squirrel cross should be recognised as a species in its own right.
